Black is not a color per se, but nevertheless or precisely for this reason it is an eternally sought-after tone. Black absorbs the entire visible color spectrum, making everything black a symbol of the hidden, a mystery. This aloofness has long been appreciated in fashion, and home trends are also constantly picking up on the color effect of black. A real highlight: special combinations of color and material, such as Black Concrete.
Concrete is the most important material for Stefan Gant. Together with copper, gold or wood, the young Berlin architect uses it to develop expressive luminaires for a high-contrast lighting design. He achieves particularly strong effects with dark pigmented concrete, which alternates between anthracite and dark black-grey. Iron oxide pigments, for example, are added to the concrete for this purpose. These change the reflective properties of the concrete so that it absorbs more light: the object appears dark gray or black.

Dark concrete attracts a lot of attention
“Pigmented concrete has long been appreciated in modern architecture: the malleability, functionality and durability of concrete is complemented by the creative aspect of the color,” explains Stefan Gant. “We also achieve a great effect in product design. Viewers often want to take a closer look at the dark surfaces and are surprised to find that they are actually concrete – a powerful effect that can be used very well for furnishing concepts.”
Arranged as a set, the lights allow for extremely diverse room designs. T2 hanging lamp from Gantlights, 189 euros
Gantlights can be individually configured
The black-grey versions are an integral part of all Gantlights product ranges and are available as delicate pendant lights, square pendant or wall lamps and triangulated floor spots. Some models are provided with a high-quality, freely selectable internal coating in gold, silver or copper, giving the light a pleasantly warm glow.
The C series pendant light from Gantlights offers the option of regulating the light via touch-dim: the light is dimmed or brightened by gently touching the steel cables. The C series can also be extensively configured visually: available in lengths of 92, 122 and 186 centimetres, the materials – for example concrete, oxidized copper, oak or walnut wood – of the lamp body and shade can be freely combined. Cable color and length can also be customized. The C series is priced between 699 and 1,999 euros.
With a copper-colored inner coating, the wall light provides pleasantly warm, indirect light. B8 wall lamp from Gantlights, 199 euros.
